The U.S. men's water polo team lost a rematch of the Beijing gold medal game on Monday 11-6 to Hungary in both teams' final preliminary stage game.
The Americans completed play in Group B with a 3-2 record, having lost their last two games to gold medal favorite Serbia and defending champion Hungary. Serbia went 4-0-1 to win the group. The U.S. tied for third with Hungary, while Montenegro came in second at 3-1-1.
San Luis Obispo native Jeff Powers scored once for Team USA on six shot attempts. His goal came in the third quarter.
Hungary scored the first 4 goals of the game and led 6-2 at halftime and 10-3 after three quarters.
The U.S., which is coached by Santa Barbara native Terry Schroeder, advanced into the quarterfinals as the #4 seed from Group B. The Americans will face Croatia, the winner of Group A, in Wednesday's quarterfinals.
The Americans won a silver medal in 2008 for their first trip to the medal podium in 20 years. They are looking for their first Olympic gold since 1904.
