London Olympic Gold Medalist and world record holder Ashton Eaton headlines the list of track and field athletes competing at the Cal Poly/Shareslo.com Invitation on Saturday.
Last June, Eaton broke an 11 year old world record in the decathlon with 9.039 points. He went on to win the Gold Medal in London with 8,869 points. The 25 year old also broke his own heptathlon world record last year. He is coached by former Central Coast resident Harry Marra. The two trained on the Central Coast two years ago because the area's weather was better for training than in Oregon, where they lived.
Eaton will compete in the javelin, 110 meter high hurdles (1:25 pm) and the shot put Saturday, as well as possibly the mile relay.
The on-campus invitational is open to the public. Field events begin with the men's javelin at 11 am and field events open at 12:15 pm with the women's steeple.
Brianne Theissen, a Canadian Olympian and the 2012 NCAA champion in the heptathlon, will also compete in the 100 hurdles, shot put and 200 on Saturday.
Former Mustang and two-time US Olympian Sharon Day is also scheduled to compete Saturday in the shot put (12pm), long jump and 200 (3:10 pm). She finished 16th at the 2012 Olympics in the heptathlon. Day won the NCAA outdoor high jump title as a Mustang.
Former Mustang and cross country star Phillip Reid is also expected to compete along with Cal Poly pole vaulter John Prader, Jamison Jordan and Lia Rivers-Birt.
Fresno State and UCSB will also send athletes to the meet.
