Drake U'u and Reese Morgan have made the most out of recent opportunities for the Cal Poly men's basketball team. Morgan, a redshirt freshman, has started the last two games for the Mustangs and produced big numbers. U'u, a senior, has done the same in the last three games where he started at point guard.
Thursday, U'u set career-high marks with 14 points and 8 assists in Cal Poly's 88-59 victory over Hawaii. Morgan drained four 3-point baskets and finished with 16 points. He poured in a career-high 26 points last Saturday in the double-overtime loss to UCSB.
Both players say their increased production is the product of adjustments they made after some preseason struggles.
"My mentality from the past couple of week has been to be more aggressive from the start whenever I get into the game because when I'm aggressive good things start happening for myself, I can set up teammates," said U'u.
"As you adjust to college basketball you got to learn what shots are open, when they're going to be open, how to get open. My teammates have been doing a great job as well of getting me open," said Morgan.
The Mustangs are now 4-3 in Big West play. They host Cal State Northridge Saturday at 7:00 pm. Cal Poly has won 8-straight conference games at home.
