On paper the UCSB women's basketball team was overmatched by Baylor and on the court the Gauchos were as well. Top ranked and undefeated Baylor beat UCSB 81-40 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday. The Game was played at Bowling Green in Ohio. UCSB finishes the season 17-16, Baylor improves to 35-0 and advances to the second round.
6"8 Baylor center Brittney Griner scored 14 points in 22 minutes to lead the Lady Bears. Baylor went ahead 12-0 and was up 46-16 at the half. The Gauchos were overmatched and struggled getting good shots on offense. As a team the Gauchos shot 27-percent (16-60) from the floor where as Baylor made 59-percent of its shots.
Senior Emilie Johnson led UCSB with 10-points. Johnson and Kelsey Adrian are the two Gauchos who played their final college games.
UCSB earned a trip to the NCAA Tournament by winning the Big West Tournament despite being the six seed. Because they didn't have a great regular season the Gauchos were awarded a 16-seed and had to play top seeded Baylor.
