The waiting game is almost over for UCSB men's basketball star Orlando Johnson. Thursday, Johnson could become the first Gaucho taken in the NBA Draft in twenty-four years.
Johnson finished his Gaucho career as UCSB's all-time leading scorer. In the past few months, he's gone from a projected undrafted player to a possible late first or early second round pick. On top of his scoring ability, the 6-5 Johnson has impressed scouts with his 6-11 wing span and 39 inch vertical.
Johnson took part in the prestigious NBA Combine a few weeks ago. He also attended workouts for the Warriors and ten other NBA teams.
O.J. says he will be watching the Draft on Thursday in Seaside. "I'm back home right now with my family. They're definitely helping me keep my nerves back under control. Now I'm just here focused on trying to make the next step and the next step is the Draft and hopefully hearing my name called," said Johnson.
The last Gaucho taken in a draft was Brian Shaw, who went to the Celtics in 1988. Boston is Johnson's favorite team. Larry Bird was his favorite player, which is a reason why Johnson wore #33 with the Gauchos.
The NBA Draft starts at 4pm PDT.
