UCSB student dies, another person injured after falling over railing

A 22 year old female UCSB student is dead, while a 22 year old man is recovering from injuries after they fell over a second story railing at an Isla Vista apartment complex early Thursday morning. It happened in the 6500 block of Cordoba Road just before 1am.

Santa Barbara County Sheriff's deputies and UCSB police officers found the two injured students after arriving on scene. They found 22 year old Mellissa Portillo, a 22 year old UCSB student with blunt force trauma to the head, who was responsive. She was rushed to Cottage Hospital, but pronounced dead a short time later by hospital staff.

22 year old Michel A.J.H. Kuster was also found on scene complaining of back and head pain. He was taken to Cottage Hospital and was listed as stable.

The initial investigation found the incident appeared to be accidental with both people falling over a second story railing at the top of the exterior stairs to the apartment complex. No foul play is suspected, but alcohol may have been a factor in the accident.
