The UC Santa Barbara women's basketball team is playing its best ball of the season. It showed on Wednesday in Anaheim. The Gauchos beat up on Pacific 82-54 in the first round of the Big West Conference Tournament. It was the team's sixth straight win. UCSB is the fifth seed in the tournament while Pacific was the eighth seed.
The Gauchos took over the game about five minutes in to the first half. They were led by Meagan Williams' 24 points. Mekia Valentine nearly missed a triple-double by collecting 20 points, 13 rebounds and 8 blocked shots. Santa Ynez High graduate Ariana Gnekow added five points for UCSB.
UCSB shot 48.4 percent for the game and held the Tigers to 31.7 percent.
The Gauchos, the defending Tournament champions, will take on fourth seeded Long Beach State on Thursday afternoon in the second round. The 49ers beat UCSB in both of their regular season meetings. The game should begin around 2:30 pm. KSBY will have highlights on Thursday night.
