What should be an exciting time for a young, Arroyo Grande couple expecting their first child has turned into a world of worry.
Shortly after getting married, Brady and Melissa Beckstead found out they were expecting. And months after that happy day came the devastating news.
Ella would be born with a rare heart condition.
"It's a defect called hypoplastic left heart syndrome, which means pretty much the left side of her heart did not develop," said Brady.
It also means a traumatic entrance into the world for little Ella.
Within just a few days of birth, she will have the first of a series of open heart surgeries.
While they cannot correct the defect, doctors will create needed connections to allow the blood to get to the body.
"She'll have lots and lots of cardiology appointments and visits throughout her entire life," said Melissa. "The first year is the hardest and most delicate. Statistically wise, a lot of babies don't make it to their first birthdays."
Her life will also be full of restrictions, but the love she will have will know no boundaries.
Already, a fundraiser is being held in Ella's honor called "Under Our Umbrella."
This family plays a huge part in the local theater community. In fact, Melissa and Brady met on stage during a play, so, naturally, the event will be a class act.
"We said let's do what we do best, let's put on a show," said Jenny Shaheen, Melissa's mother. "We have musicians, artists, dancers and bands and we're all going to come together on July 8 and have an event."
It is being held at the Pismo Vet's Hall and will also include casino tables, desserts, a no-host bar and a few surprises are in store.
While the fundraiser is underway, Brady and Melissa are getting ready for their most challenging roles yet as mom and dad of a little actress about to make her debut.
Baby Ella is due in September.
In August, Brady and Melissa will leave their jobs and move to Los Angeles for three months so they can be near children's hospital.
The money raised at the event will go toward medical and relocation costs.
Tickets are $30.

They can also be purchased in person at Cheap Thrills in San Luis Obispo or Beauty Secrets in Pismo Beach.
