A local union group is doing something unusual, crossing union picket lines to support a local business. The Tri-Counties Building and Construction Trades Council is standing behind Doc Burnstein's Ice Cream Lab in a fight against the Carpenters union.
The Carpenters Union Local 150 has been protesting in front of the ice cream shop in Arroyo Grande since October 2009. It believes Doc Burnstein's hired a non-union contractor to build its location inside the Santa Maria Town Center. However, the mall, not Doc Burnstein's, is paying for the construction work.
In support, the Trades Council is offering to buy ice cream for anyone coming to the ice cream shop in the Arroyo Grande Village between 1 and 6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 26.
We'll have details on the labor dispute tonight on KSBY News at 6.
