Cal Fire says they know the cause of the fire that burned more than 5 acres near a popular hiking spot last month. The fire started on the hill top about Pirate Cove near Cave Landing Road in northern Shell Beach.

Although the investigation is ongoing, CalFire says they have witness testimony saying a Chinese floating lantern was released from Pirates Cove.

Fire official said the lanterns were on sale at a popular box store and had cause fires previously in the San Diego area.

There were no reports of any injuries or structures damage during the fire.
