Five Atascadero men were arrested Saturday, after police said, they fired multiple shots within city limits causing part of Highway 41 to be shut down for about an hour.
Just before 5 pm, Atascadero Police said they received numerous reports that up to 100 shots were fired near the riverbed.
Officers closed down Highway 41 between San Gabriel Road and Los Altos Road, while they closed in on the area.
When they arrived, officers tell KSBY they heard shots from what appeared to be high-powered rifles.
Multiple law enforcement agencies responded, and a CHP helicopter also assisted.
They said the suspects, all men in their 20's, were target practicing. Officers say four of them complied with officers orders and were taken into custody. A fifth suspect hid near the creek bed, but later surrendered after officers in the helicopter gave orders to come out.
They were all arrested for discharging a weapon within city limits.
"Proximity of the roadway was our main concern. The dense vegetation and the state road again presented a tactical issue so that's why we shut down the highway and responded the helicopter and got allied agencies for assistance," said Sergeant Robert Molle of the Atascadero Police Department.
Police said no one was injured.
The suspects' names have not been released.
