Our reporter at the scene, Hope Hanselman just called in the latest details on the bank robbery and related car crash in Santa Maria to the KSBY newsroom.
Here's the latest... Santa Maria Police said an Atascadero man robbed Chase Bank on North Broadway, stole a Santa Maria Police car, and injured several people when trying to get away.
Police say Phillip Craig Bailey, born in 1969, threatened the teller at Chase Bank, that he had a weapon, and demanded money.
After leaving the bank, police say Bailey tried to carjack two vehicles before he was confronted by a Santa Maria Police officer.
After getting into a physical fight with Bailey, the officer tried to taser Bailey, but was unsuccessful. Police say, while still fighting with the officer, Bailey jumped into the police car, drove away, and dragged the officer down the street.
A short time later, Bailey collided with a pick-up truck, severely injuring the passenger. The driver has moderate injuries.
Police say Bailey drove on and hit a pedestrian and two parked cars. The pedestrian was taken to Cottage Hospital.
Bailey was arrested and is facing charges of bank robbery, carjacking and attempted carjacking.
CHP will also be filing charges against Bailey.
We'll have a full report tonight on our news at 6:30.
