A Paso Robles woman and a Nipomo man died after their cars collided near Templeton, early Saturday night.
The crash happened on Highway 46 West and Jack Creek Road just before five pm.
CHP said the 62 year-old woman was heading west on Highway 46, and crossed over the solid double yellow lines, while trying to pass other westbound traffic.
They said her white Lexus crossed directly into the path of a 50 year-old man driving a GMC pick-up.
Investigators said he tried to avoid the Lexus, but it hit the left front of his pick-up.
The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.
The man died about two hours later at Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center.
Their names have not been released, so family can be notified.
