The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Department is still on the scene in Paso Robles where they say an officer was shot early Saturday morning.
Deputies say a traffic stop was initiated on Spring Street, but the suspect left.
A pursuit then went through Paso Robles until deputies say the suspect crashed his car into a tree on 13th and Spring Street.
They say the suspect then got out of his car and ran to 14th and Park, where multiple rounds were exchanged between a California Highway Patrol officer and the suspect.
Officials have the area blocked off as they continue searching for more evidence.
They say the officer and suspect were taken to the hospital where they are being treated for gunshot wounds.
Their condition is not known.
Officials say a CHP airplane was in the area after the incident taking aerial photos to map out the crime scene.
