Santa Barbara County fire officials say a 58-year-old man was transported by helicopter to a local hospital Sunday afternoon after nearly drowning.

Just after 3:10 p.m., they were called out to Refugio Beach where witnesses say a man was pulled out of the water by bystanders after being under for one to two minutes.

Two off-duty nurses and State Park Rangers performed CPR and used an AED device while they waited for paramedics. When County Fire paramedics arrived at the scene, they were able to get spontaneous pulses, but the man still needed breathing support.

Officials say he is still in critical condition.
