UPDATE: Suspect in critical condition following officer involved shooting

A Santa Barbara County Sheriff's deputy is on paid administrative leave and a suspected trespasser is in critical condition after an officer involved shooting in Carpinteria on Sunday night. The Sheriff's Office says deputies were called to the 3200 block of Beach Club Drive on a report of a trespasser. Deputies say they found a white man in his 20s inside a home in which the homeowner was not there. The man was taken into custody, handcuffed and placed in the back of a patrol car. The Sheriff's Office says the suspect then knocked out the plexiglass partition and climbed into the front seat. Officials say he started to drive the car away and deputies ran after him. They say one of the deputies fired several shots, some of which struck the suspect. The man was taken to an area hospital. The Sheriff's Office says he has an extensive criminal record. His name has not yet been released. The Sheriff's Office says the Santa Barbara County Criminal Investigations Bureau is reviewing the case and a Departmental Administrative investigation is underway.
