UPDATE: Suspicious item in Santa Maria parking lot was empty, not hazardous

The Santa Maria Fire Department says the suspicious gas cylinder placed in a parking lot Friday was empty.

Firefighters were called out to the 600 block of West Main Street around 10:30 a.m. They found a large, compressed gas cylinder and determined that it was possibly an explosive device.

The Santa Barbara County Hazardous Materials Team and the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Bomb Task Force were called out to help. Bomb Technicians used a robot to get a closer look at the container. They also took x-rays of the container, which helped them figure out that the container was empty and not dangerous.
