Two men were cut from a truck this morning after crashing into a tree on one of the busiest streets in Santa Maria.
The Santa Maria Police Department says the driver was unlicensed and that alcohol was involved.
Officers also believe the driver lost control due to speed and slippery roads.
The truck sideswiped another vehicle before spinning out into the median.
Both men survived and were sent to the local hospital.
"It's pretty intense. The truck as you can see from the side right here is pretty banged up," said Doug Giddings.
Doug Giddings and his grandmother watched as the truck that sideswiped her car is towed away.
"I think she's shaken up," said Giddings.
Minutes before, that truck was wrapped around a tree, while the driver was being pulled out and the passenger was still trapped inside.
"The clipping of a vehicle in front of them caused them to lose control and spin out of control and strike a tree," said Corporal Bob Prescott, Santa Maria Police Department.
Corporal Prescott says the truck was heading northbound on South Broadway when it hit a car that was pulling out onto the road.
"Common sense is to slow down and judge your actions before you get there," said Corporal Prescott.
But officers say the driver didn't slow down and along with alcohol and fast driving, road conditions weren't ideal.
"Even with slight rain today, the roadways become slick. The oils get drawn out to the top of the surface of the asphalt and it's very slippery," said Corporal Prescott.
He says this accident should send a strong message.
"Slow down. Especially when the roadways are slick," said Corporal Prescott.
It's a message Giddings and his grandmother never want to experience again.
"You have to be moving to get that much damage done to your vehicle," said Giddings.
The driver of the car that was hit by the truck wasn't injured.
This case is expected to be handed over to the District Attorney's office to review for possible charges.
