UPDATE: Ventura County fire burns 2 homes, threatens more

FILLMORE, Calif. (AP) - Pushed by powerful winds, a wildfire swept across orchards and open fields in Ventura County, burning two homes and threatening dozens more.

County fire officials say the blaze began in a mobile home Monday afternoon in Fillmore then spread to brush, bearing down on a neighborhood and burning a large home.

No injuries have been reported.

Fire spokesman Capt. Mike Lindbery says firefighters were working to get ahead of the 50-acre blaze amid wind gusts of more than 40 mph.

The Sheriff's Department says evacuation orders have been issued for 84 homes and more than 200 people.

By nightfall winds had calmed somewhat and the fire appeared to be burning away from homes, but fire officials urged residents of the city of 15,000 to be prepared to evacuate.
