The Cal Poly men's tennis team is thinking about upsets this week. The Mustangs are preparing for their second-straight appearance in the NCAA Division I Championships. The Big West Conference champions face 22nd ranked Texas Tech in the first round on Saturday at UC Berkeley.
Last year in the program's first-ever Division I Regional appearance, the Mustangs fell to Washington in the opening round.
This time around, the Mustangs are ready to take care of business. "It'll be a good thing for the program. We're just going to go out there and we have nothing to lose. We made history already by winning conference and we can hopefully make more history by winning a round in the NCAA's," said junior Andre Dome. The Arroyo Grande High graduate went undefeated in conference play without losing a set. The Big West Player of the Year was recently invited to play in the Division I Championships for singles and doubles.
"There's such a small percentage of kids that play college tennis who make it to the NCAA tournament in college. We've already accomplished a whole lot and we're still accomplishing of a lot more. Now it's win or go home," said first year head coach Nick Carless.
The Mustangs credit Carless for their success. "We've all stuck together. We've all fought as hard as we could on the tennis and we've had the best season in history after having the best season in history last year," said senior captain Brian McPhee.
After dealing with injuries in the conference tournament, Carless says his team is healthy going into the NCAA Tournament.
The match is at 9 am Saturday at UC Berkeley. 14th ranked Cal is hosting the Regional.
