Staked to a 13 point lead after the first quarter, the Valley Christian Academy girls basketball team advanced into the CIF Division 6 semifinals with a 52-42 win over visiting Capistrano Valley Christian on Wednesday night.
The Lions, who are the top seed in the division, improved to 22-2 and advanced to the final four for the second year in a row.
Kari Humann hit two early 3-point buckets to help the Lions build a 19-6 lead after the first quarter. The senior guard finished with a game-high 16 points.
VCA led 28-14 at the half. The Eagles closed to within six points in the second half, but after coach Pete Fortier called a timeout the Lions regained control and pushed the lead back into double digits.
Sophomore Simone Swain and junior Ellie Hedlund added 9 points apiece. Swain added 15 rebounds and 4 steals. Catalina Paniagua chipped in 7 points for VCA.
Lexi Kunkle led Capistrano with 14 points.
VCA plays at Rio Hondo Prep on Saturday in the semifinals. Rio Hondo beat Lancaster Baptist 66-24 in the quarterfinals Wednesday.
VCA beat Rio Hondo in the quarterfinals last season before falling to Providence Hall in the semifinals.
