A Santa Maria man is facing manslaughter and other charges following a deadly crash near Santa Maria Thursday that killed two people and seriously injured two others, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The CHP says Daniel Castillo, 37, of Santa Maria, was driving a forklift that slammed into a Honda Civic at about 2:45 p.m. on Philbric Road near Betteravia Road.
"Castillo, who was driving south, attempted to make a left turn into an agricultural field when he struck the left side of the northbound Civic, driving it into a nearby drainage ditch," said Officer Craig Carrier, CHP.
According to Carrier, the 18-year-old male driver of the Civic and a 49-year-old female passenger in the left rear seat were declared dead at the scene. They have been identified as Adolfo Carrasco and Casilda Pozos, both of Santa Maria.
Two others, Mayte Carrasco, 40, and Celiset Pozos, 19, also both of Santa Maria, were in serious but stable condition at local hospitals Friday.
Castillo was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter and DUI, both felonies, and was booked into Santa Barbara County Jail.
