The city of Atascadero helped the Greyhound wrestling team celebrate its CIF title in style on Wednesday. This afternoon, the city's fire department, other agencies and businesses escorted the Greyhounds during a victory parade around town.
They started at the school and ended up in front of City Hall where city leaders and fans saluted head coach Jeff Spiller and his 71 wrestlers.
About two weeks ago, the Greyhounds captured the CIF Eastern Division team title. It was their second straight championship and the eleventh in program history.
Wrestlers said the long time tradition of a victory parade was a great way to end a great season.
"I like it a lot because I do think a lot of people think that wrestling is underrated compared to a lot of sports. And to have it recognized with the city council and fire trucks, it gets peoples attention. So we get recognized and it's a good thing," said Elijah Jackson.
"It's pretty cool because last year I was on the team but I didn't wrestle in CIF. But this year I got to and I was pretty excited about that," said senior Josh Lowe, who wrestled at 137 pounds.
With several key wrestlers returning next season, the Hounds like their chances for a three-peat.
