VIN etching event aims to reduce vehicle thefts

The Santa Barbara branch of the Automobile Club of Southern California, the CHP, the Santa Barbara Police Department, and the National Insurance Crime Bureau are offering free anti-theft Vehicle Identification Number etching for vehicle windows Wednesday.

It runs from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the Macy's lower level parking lot of La Cumbre Plaza, which is located at 136 S. Hope Street.

You don't have to be an Auto Club member to get the service.

Officials say VIN etching on vehicle windows helps prevent car theft because VIN etched car parts can't be sold as easily. Officers will also give out theft prevention tips.
