Some new numbers released by the FBI earlier this week show violent crime in the U.S. dropped just more than 5 percent in 2009.

Here on the Central Coast, violent crime increased by about 18 percent in Santa Maria and by 3 percent in San Luis Obispo.

The violent crime rate dropped in 2009 by 13 percent in Santa Barbara and by about 23 percent in Paso Robles, when compared to 2008.

Violent crime includes murder, rape, robbery and aggravated assault.
