Wagman wins record-tying 12th game, Mustangs beat Pacific 8-4

Nick Torres and Jordan Ellis helped Cal Poly overcame an early 4-1 deficit and pitcher Joey Wagman tied a program record for most wins in a single season in the Mustangs 8-5 win at Pacific on Thursday.

The 22nd ranked Mustangs improved to 16-9 in conference and are now alone in second place in the Big West. Cal Poly is 38-16 overall, tying the 2004 squad's Division I record for most victories in a season.

Wagman survived a shaky first three innings when he allowed 4 runs and 6 hits. Once the Cal Poly offense made some noise, the senior right hander stepped up his game and allowed just 2 more hits in his final 5 innings. He went 8 innings on the night and scattered 8 hits and 4 runs. He walked 1 and struck out 4. Wagman improved to 12-3 on the season and tied Garrett Olson's program record set in 2005 for most wins in a single season. The senior also now stands alone in third with 26 career victories.

Torres started Cal Poly's offense in the top of the first with a double down the left field line that scored Denver Chavez, who was hit by a pitch to lead off the game. Pacific answered with 3 runs in the first and one more in the second to build a 4-1 lead after two.

The Mustangs tied it in the third with three runs when Chavez tripled to the right center field gap to start the rally. Ellis singled up the middle to score Chavez and make it a 4-2 game. Torres followed with a 2-run home run to left field to tie it 4-4. The sophomore finished the game 3 for 4 with his 8th home run of the season and upped his team leading RBI total to 46.

Cal Poly took the lead for good in the fourth when Ellis doubled to left center to drive in John Schuknecht, who singled earlier in the frame. The Mustangs added two runs in the seventh when Jimmy Allen stroked a two-out single to left to drive home Ellis. David Armendariz followed with a single to center to score Torres and make it a 7-4 game. They added another run on an error in the top of the ninth.

The Mustangs finished with 12 hits overall. Ellis went 3 for 5 with 2 RBI and 2 runs scored. Allen went 2 for 5 with a RBI and Schuknecht went 2 for 4.

Michael Holback pitched a scoreless ninth to close out the win for the Mustangs. He allowed 1 hit and struck out 2.

The series continues on Friday with a 6 pm start and the regular season ends on Saturday with a 2 pm game. Cal Poly is trying to solidify its resume for the program's second-ever berth into a NCAA Regional. The last time the Mustangs made it to the postseason was in 2009. The NCAA Selection Show is on Monday morning.
