January 1 is prime time to start an exercise regimen, and a new study suggests simply increasing the number of steps walked in a day can help people at high risk for Type II Diabetes cut some of their health risks.
Researchers in the UK analyzed data on adults with impaired glucose tolerance, a form of pre-diabetes. All wore pedometers to measure how much they walked for a year.
They found an increase of 2,000 steps a day cut their risk for heart disease by 8%.
