Warriors beat Eagles in Pac 7 showdown of ranked teams

The Righetti High boys water polo team made sure it left no doubt it is the favorite to win the Pac 7 League title on Tuesday. The Warriors beat visiting Arroyo Grande 16-7 in a key league game in a battle of two ranked teams that were undefeated in league play.

The Warriors improved to 3-0 in league and 11-5 overall. The Eagles fell to 3-1 in league action and 4-3 overall.

AG struck first when Jack Empey buried a penalty shot in the bottom right corner of the goal to make it 1-0 Eagles. The Warriors went on a 7-0 run from there fueled by 3 goals from Keanu Martinez. The senior finished with a game-high 5 goals for the Warriors. Jeremy Grden, another senior, added 3 goals for Righetti.

The Eagles were led by Empey, the junior had 4 goals. David Vitt, a junior, scored 2 goals. Hissam El-Effendi added the other AG goal. Goalie Chandler Mankins made 7 saves in net for AG.

Righetti is searching for a piece of its fifth-straight league title. The Warriors won outright titles in 2010 and 2011. They shared the crown with AG in 2008 and 2009, while the Eagles won it outright in 2007. Righetti has won at least a share of the title every year except 2007 since1995.

The Warriors entered the game ranked #2 in the CIF-Southern Section Division 4 coaches poll. The Eagles came in ranked #5.

This season, Pac 7 teams are playing each team once in the regular season rather than twice. The Pac 7 will play a league tournament with a final to determine the league champion similar to what the Los Padres League does.
