Waterlogged residents in Los Osos have been hit hard by the wet weather. The annoying noise of a street pump is actually a sweet sound to people who live along the flooded streets of Los Osos. Resident, Sherri Ross says, "The pump is our live saver. When it starts raining hard and you don't hear that pump you start making phone calls."
Several pumps are located above and below the ground throughout Los Osos. The constant barrage of wet weather proved too much for the drainage station on 6th street and El Morro. The pump stopped working and flooding is the result. Streets look more like rivers . Los Osos Community Services District General Manager, Dan Gilmore, says "The pump may be clogged. It's having some trouble so, we've got a temporary pump set up pumping into the drain pipe to move this water out of the intersection."
Driveways have turned to lakes. One home in Los Osos has more then two inches of water inside. With one pump out of commission and more rain on the way, residents in the area are left with only one line of defense. Sand bags. "Water was cresting our driveway and coming in the garage so we called the fire department and they had sand and sand bags" says one resident.
Hoping to keep every drop that falls from the sky, outside, residents strategically place sandbags around their homes. But, they say, the bags of soggy sand can only do so much. Ross says, "We can usually fight the water with the sand. But, when people come by too fast it creates a wave that washes over the top of the sandbags so you can't stop that because if the water is that high it will breach up here if you go through too fast."
If it's not one thing it's another when it comes to this wet weather and the problems it can create. As we all know the problems are not limited to Los Osos.
