Requiring obese adults to exercise in order to receive cheaper health benefits is an effective strategy -- although a third of participants think the program is coercive.
Research at the University of Michigan studied a group of people insured by Blue Care Network. Obese people had the option of enrolling in a weight loss program or paying 20% more for health insurance.
They found 97% of enrollees who chose the pedometer-based walking program met their goal of five thousand steps each day.
