Two Arroyo Grande High athletes, who are about to start their college football careers at Oregon State, received one final honor from Cal-HI Sports this weekend. The ESPNHS affiliate named Brent VanderVeen and Garrett Weinreich to its Senior Boys Athletes of the Year Honor Roll for Division II. Only seven athletes statewide received the honor in Division II.
VanderVeen and Weinreich were instrumental in the Eagles' first CIF football title in 13 years in the fall. VanderVeen, an All-CIF quarterback, threw for 2,422 yards and 20 touchdowns, while he rushed for 465 yards and 6 more scores. The Eagles finished 13-1 overall. Weinreich, an All-State pick and PAC 7 Offensive Lineman of the Year, anchored the Eagles' line. The 6-4 Weinreich helped the Eagles average 39 points and more than 400 yards of total offense per game.
VanderVeen also averaged 16.3 points and 13.4 rebounds per game for the boys basketball team. He guided the Eagles to the PAC 7 title and first berth in the CIF championship game in 42 years. The three year varsity basketball player was named the league MVP and earned All-CIF honors.
Weinreich won the CIF-Southern Section Division II and CIF Masters Meet title in the shot put. He finished second in the CIF State Meet with a career-best throw of 61 feet, 11.5 inches.
VanderVeen and Weinreich earned full scholarships to play football at Oregon State this fall.
