Q: Why is my dog eating cat doo doo whenever I take him out for a walk?? He's driving me crazy and I end up scolding him all the time! What shall I do to refrain him from doing this??? Please advise.
A: Unfortunately, eating cat poop is a normal behavior for a dog - just like chasing cats and barking at strangers. Dogs probably think it tastes good too! It is very difficult to teach a dog to not eat feces and the best thing to do is to deny access. Keep your dog on a leash and stay away from areas where cats poop. Any training technique you try to employ will be very sophisticated and require a great deal of time and dedication on your part - and it still might fail.
When animals eat the feces of other animals, they can get worms. In our area, these worms are not usually a big problem for our adult dogs and cats, but they can be a serious problem for people. This is why we recommend year 'round intestinal parasite control for all dogs and outdoor cats - it helps to protect the people!
