STOCKTON, Calif. (AP) - Investigators are questioning several suspects and witnesses after a wild, late-night auto chase and shootout with Stockton police that left one person dead and another injured.
Stockton Police spokesman Joe Silva says it began at about 11 p.m. Wednesday when police responded to a woman suffering gunshots wounds when officers spotted a van matching witness descriptions as being involved. Silva says officers gave chase after the van refused to pull over and the suspects fired on and hit a pursuing patrol car. The 10-minute chase ended in a residential neighborhood, where Silva says several suspects emerged from the van and fired on police with an arsenal that included an assault rifle.
Police say Joseph Brooks died at the scene and Darold Jarvis was arrested after being treated for his injuries.
