Officials with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife are planning to tranquilize a mountain lion spotted in a Santa Barbara backyard Monday morning.
According to a spokesperson for the department, the animal is in a fenced yard in the 400 block of Apple Grove Lane. The spokesperson estimates the mountain lion is an adult and weighs around 100 pounds. Wildlife officials plan to tranquilize the animal within the hour. A veterinarian who is currently on scene will then evaluate the mountain lion's health to determine whether it needs to be euthanized, the spokesperson said.
People were inside two nearby homes when the animal was spotted.
A spokesperson for nearby Adams Elementary school says the children will not be allowed to play outside until the situation wraps up.
