Matt Willkomm sparked a furious third quarter rally to lead the Arroyo Grande High boys basketball team to a 63-44 win over Redlands East Valley on Tuesday in a Division 2A second round game.
The senior point guard scored ten points in the third quarter during which AG outscored the Wildcats 17-4 to erased a 32-23 halftime deficit. Willkomm scored 6-straight points to end the quarter. He finished with a game-high 19 points to go with 7 rebounds and 5 steals.
Sophomore Cobe Williams poured in 17 points to go with 3 steals, 3 assists and 3 rebounds. Senior Brennan Rivera recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Andrew Midyett added 7 points and DeSean Scott finished with 6.
"Our shots weren't going in the beginning but I felt like we just kept shooting and they kept going in," said Willkomm. "We just rallied off the crowd and making our baskets and I just feel like we never gave up."
The Eagles outscored the Wildcats 40-12 in the second half. They finished 21 for 28 from the free throw line.
"We knew it was only nine points and we just had to buckle down on defense. We just had to come down and make some stops," said Williams.
Arroyo Grande improved to 20-8 and hosts Canyon on Friday in the quarterfinals. Canyon out of Anaheim beat Don Lugo 85-59 in the second round.
