Righetti's Luke Wilson is the winner of the KSBY Male Prep Athlete of the Year Award. Wilson was a standout football player and wrestler for the Warriors. "It feels great, just an honor to be recognized as a great athlete" said Wilson.
Wilson was a two way player for the Righetti football team. As a wide receiver, the senior had 68 catches for 1,064 yards and 7 touchdowns. As a safety, Wilson made 138 tackles and intercepted 4 passes. He also caused 3 fumbles and blocked a field goal.
As a wrestler, Wilson won a State Championship in the 152 pound weight class, he only lost two matches all season. Wilson leaves an impressive wrestling legacy at Righetti. "I would like to think so because I was the first state champion since 1977 and hopefully people remember me and people growing up want to be the next state champ at Righetti. So hopefully they push themselves just as hard as I pushed myself" said Wilson.
Wilson finished third at the National Wrestling Meet in Virginia. "Nobody ever wants to lose but you just have to have the mentality where you got to be better than everyone else and you also got to realize when you're training, someone else could be training harder than you so you got to push yourself" said Wilson who will wrestle at Cal Poly next season.
The other finalists for Male Prep Athlete of the Year were Lompoc's Nikko Hayes, Mission Prep's Andy Rowley, Templeton's Andy Garretson and Arroyo Grande's Matt Willkomm.
On Thursday, Nipomo's Cristina Ozzimo won the Female Prep Athlete of the Year award.
