Wilson wins State Championship

Righetti senior Luke Wilson won a 7-3 decision to win the 152 pound weight class at the State Wrestling Meet on Saturday. The two day event was held at the Rabobank Arena in Bakersfield. Wilson becomes the second Righetti wrestler to win a state championship and first since 1977 after a perfect 5-0 run through the tournament.

Wilson won three matches on Friday, two by pin, one on points (15-0). On Saturday morning he beat Colemond Hammond from Bakersfield High School, 5-1 in the semifinals. That set up a championship match between second ranked Wilson and top ranked Shayne Tucker of Bella Vista.

The match was scoreless until late in the second period when Wilson scored an escape. Early in the third and final period Tucker tied the match at 1 with an escape. Wilson scored a takedown for two points before letting Tucker escape for a point. Wilson scored two more takedowns and Tucker got an additional escape as Wilson won, 7-3.

Wilson avenged both of his losses this season with his wins on Saturday. Tucker and Hammond were the two wrestlers to defeat him.

Wilson has yet to commit to a college but plans to wrestle wherever he goes.
