Woman accused of posing as doctor in San Diego

SAN DIEGO (AP) - San Diego county prosecutors say they've charged a woman with posing as a doctor who claimed she could cure Lyme disease and charged patients thousands of dollars to be injected with chemical solvents.
District attorney's spokesman Steve Walker says one patient of 57-year-old Kathleen Ann Helms suffered organ failure and barely survived the treatment.
Helms is accused of injecting patients with a non-FDA approved chemical solvent and what she claimed were bovine stem cells.
Walker says Helms is not a licensed medical doctor, osteopath or naturopath.
Helms pleaded not guilty Wednesday to 11 felonies. She could get more than 12 years in prison if convicted on all charges.
Helms is in custody on $250,000 bail. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Aug. 28.
