Woods Humane Society marked a major milestone, Thursday -- they altered their 13,000th animal.
Their surgical suite opened in 2006.
It was designed to spay and neuter just Woods' animals.
But now, they service all San Luis Obispo County Animal Services' dogs and cats and dozens of rescue groups.
To date, they average 30 surgeries every day.

With dog and cat bellies prepped... anesthesia administered... it's light's out for about 25 dogs and cats scheduled for surgery.

According to the American Cancer Society, about 12,000 animals are euthanized every day, simply because they're homeless.

"This is the first line of defense. This is where we stop the homeless issue," said Executive Director Cory Karpin. "This surgery suite was designed to do about 700 surgeries a year, and now we're up to 4000 surgeries a
year."

Dr. Steven Jefferson and Dr. Heather Harris can alter up to 50 dogs and cats in a day. Most surgeries last only ten minutes. KSBY got to go inside the operating room, to see a procedure in action. Terrier mix puppy, Croatia's incision was less than two inches long. After a few sutures and a tattoo noting she'd been spayed... she woke up about a half hour later, and be up for adoption the next day.

Dr. Jefferson said, she'll ultimately be a happier, healthier dog.
"Their personalities do not change, if anything they become better pets," he said.

But some unwanted behaviors will go away, like male aggression, the urge to roam, and female crying and panting when in heat.
Plus, risks of certain cancers and tumors actually decrease.

Dr. Jefferson said he started operating at Woods just one day a week. Now, he's spaying and neutering five days a week.
"Hopefully it's just the beginning. Hopefully next year it will be 26,000."
