Mission Prep's trap defense wreaked havoc early and often as the Royals cashed turnovers into fast break points in a 70-23 win over Laton in a Division 5 State Tournament first round game on Wednesday.
The Royals stormed out to a 12-0 lead. Laton closed the gap to six points at 13-7 before the Royals went on another dominant run. Mission led 21-9 after the first quarter and outscored Laton 24-2 in the second quarter to take a commanding 45-11 into the locker room at halftime.
Connor Woolpert scored the Royals first seven points of the game. He finished with a team-high 19 points. Quinton Adlesh added 16 points.
The Royals host #11 San Gabriel Valley in Saturday's Regional Quarterfinals. San Gabriel (23-9) upset #6 Rolling Hills Prep (22-9) 51-35 in the first round.
