The third time in the CIF-Southern Section semifinals proved to be the charm for the Mission Prep boys basketball team. The Royals upset 2nd seeded Flintridge Prep in La Canada 60-58 on Friday in a Division 5AA semifinal to advance to the championship game.
The Royals trailed 18-8 after the first quarter and 28-25 at the half. But they outscored the Rebels 22-14 in the third quarter to take control. Connor Woolpert erupted for 14 points in the third quarter on three 3-pointers, including a shot from three-quarters down the floor at the buzzer. Mission led 47-42 after three quarters.
The senior finished with a game-high 22 points.
The Royals made 9 of their 11 free throws in the fourth quarter and 18 of 23 for the game. Quinton Adlesh scored 5 of his 13 points in the fourth quarter for Mission.
Andy Rowley and Tyler Baty added 8 points apiece.
Kareem Ismail led the Rebels with 15 points. The Royals held Flintridge's leading scorer Robert Cartwright to 13 points. He averaged 23 points in the Rebels' first three playoff games.
The Royals improved to 23-7 and snapped a three game losing skid to Flintridge. The Rebels beat Mission earlier this year and knocked the Royals out ot the CIF semifinals two years ago. Woolpert did not play the first time the two teams met this season.
The CIF-Southern Section office will announce the schedule of the championship games on Monday afternoon.
