Work begins on aging Cayucos Pier

Crews are now working to stabilize the aging Cayucos Pier through the winter months. Work started on the deck, but it's only a temporary fix.The pier has to be rebuilt. San Luis Obispo County budgeted about $600,000 for repairs. The rebuild is expected to cost more than $1 million. Community efforts and the group Save the Cayucos Pier have so far raised more than $300,000. Greg Bettencourt with Save the Cayucos Pier says, "Essentially what they are doing is tying pilings together like getting a bridge in your mouth. They are using huge steel beams to bolt one good piling to another." The pier has been partially closed since July because of safety concerns. As of December 11, the entire pier is closed and it could be this way for a year.
