After recording successive shutout victories to help the Cal Poly softball program sweep a three game series at Cal State Fullerton, sophomore Chloe Wurst was named Big West Conference Pitcher of the Week on Monday afternoon. It marked the first Big West honor in her collegiate career.
During the series opener, Wurst scattered four hits, walked one, struck out three and allowed just two Titan baserunners into scoring position in Cal Poly's 1-0 win.
Wurst returned the following day and allowed four hits without walking a Titan batter as part of a 4-0 win that helped Cal Poly record its first road sweep of a Big West opponent in three seasons.
The left-hander also tossed one inning of relief for her first career save earlier in the week when the Mustangs split a doubleheader against Fresno State.
During four appearances last week, Wurst compiled a 0.47 ERA and walked just one hitter in 15 innings.
As of Monday, Wurst (8-8-1) ranked fourth among Big West pitchers in ERA (2.28) and innings pitched (113.2), fifth in victories and starts (18) and sixth in strikeouts (79).
Off to the program's best conference start in three seasons, Cal Poly (15-20-1, 4-2) hosts Pacific (20-17, 5-1) for a three-game April 6-7 series. Action at Bob Janssen Field opens with a 12 noon doubleheader on Saturday.
