Sophomore lefthander Chloe Wurst threw a second-straight shutout to help the Cal Poly softball team upset another top 25 ranked team on Friday. The Mustangs knocked off #13 Georgia at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic in Cathedral City.
Wurst scattered four hits in a complete game. Six days ago, she struck out a career-high 7 in Cal Poly's 2-0 win over 18th ranked Washington. She retired the first seven batters of the game against the Bulldogs and escaped threats in the sixth and seventh innings.
The Mustangs scored the lone run of the game in the fifth inning. Jillian Andersen and Celina Lagrades singled and Kim Westlund walked. That loaded the bases with two outs for senior Whitley Gerhart, who drew a five pitch walk to force in Andersen with the winning run.
Cal Poly is now 3-8 overall,
The Mustangs continue play at the Mary Nutter Classic Saturday against Ohio State at 9:30 am and against 9th ranked Oregon at 3 pm.
