A luncheon in Santa Barbara today focused on the importance of getting more girls involved in athletics. Congresswoman Lois Capps attended the event to speak about how exercise plays a role in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. The annual "Women in Sports" luncheon took place at the Earl Warren Showgrounds. The featured speaker was a chemistry professor and renowned surfer, who says sports have helped her excel, reach her goals, and fight peer pressure.
"It allows us to have a venue to find out who we are as individuals and really to begin to operate in those strengths and then to go out and give back to our community, said Sarah Gerhardt, who says playing basketball first gave her confidence when she was growing up.
The Santa Barbara Athletic Roundtable hosted the event.
