YUBA CITY, Calif. (AP) - Army officials say a soldier from Yuba City was among three killed this week by a bomb in Afghanistan.
Twenty-four-year-old Spc. Chase Marta died Monday when his unit was hit in Ghazni province. Also killed were Sgt. Jacob Schwallie and Pfc. Dustin Gross. They were all with the 82nd Airborne Division based at Fort Bragg, N.C.
Family members say Marta had only been in Afghanistan for six weeks.
Taylor Marta told the Marysville Appeal-Democrat that her brother wasn't a big fan of school but found his niche in the Army. He finished first in his basic training class.
His mother, Karyn Stone, says she only recently learned that he had planned to propose to his girlfriend when he returned to Yuba City. The plan was so new that he hadn't yet told his family.
