IRS scam targets thousands

Posted: Updated:

Fake IRS agents have targeted nearly 400,000 people and managed to swindle 3,000 into giving more than $15.5 million.

The Treasury Department deputy inspector testified in front of a Senate committee last week, calling the scam the largest and most effective swindle the Treasury knows of.

The criminals have called people of all ages and all economic levels.

People claiming to be IRS agents place harassing phone calls to victims, and threatening them with jail time if they don't pay quickly.

The IRS won't initiate contact by calling you on the phone.
