Local law enforcement agencies warning about phone scam

Posted: Updated:

Local law enforcement is reminding and warning people about a phone scam targeting people on the Central Coast.

Callers posing as IRS or U.S. Treasury employees are demanding money paid through pre-paid debit cards or wire transfers.

Authorities in Santa Barbara, Lompoc, Santa Maria and San Luis Obispo County all say they've received an uptick in these reports in the last week.

They remind people the IRS will never demand immediate payment, require you to use a specific payment method, or threaten arrest for not paying over the phone.
