Telephone scam targeting Santa Barbara water utility customers

Posted: Updated:

The Santa Barbara Police Department is reporting a scam that targets Santa Barbara water utility customers.

The Department says customers are contacted by phone and told they must immediately make a payment or their water service will be disconnected.

The City of Santa Barbara says it does not request payment over the telephone and only sends utility disconnection notices via regular mail.

Police say you should not provide financial information, including credit card or bank account numbers, over the phone to anyone claiming to be a utility employee.

If you believe you have been a victim of this scam, and suffered a financial loss because of it, you can file a police report online with the Santa Barbara Police Department here: http://www.santabarbaraca.gov/gov/depts/police/online/report_crime/default.asp

To contact the City of Santa Barbara's Billing Office, call (805) 564-5343.
