Thousands of sea life killed in 1969 oil spill in Santa Barbara

Posted: Updated:

Santa Barbara is no stranger to oil spills. The most notable happened back in 1969.

It was January 28 when a Union Oil Company platform, about five miles off the coast of Summerland, had a blowout.

About three million gallons of oil were spilled and it took 11 days for workers to clean up the mess.

Tar washed up along 35 miles of coastline.

The oil killed dolphins, seals, and more than 3,500 birds.
